Net Run Rate is the difference between the run rate scored and the run rate conceded across all matches.
The IPL 2026 points table determines which four teams qualify for the playoffs. Teams earn 2 points for a win, 1 point for a no-result, and 0 points for a loss. In case of teams finishing on equal points, the Net Run Rate (NRR) acts as the tiebreaker — making every run scored and conceded crucial throughout the league stage.
With 84 matches in the league stage, each of the 10 teams plays approximately 14 matches. Historically, teams need around 16-18 points (8-9 wins) to secure a playoff spot, though the exact cutoff varies each season. The top 2 teams earn a significant advantage by getting two chances to reach the final through Qualifier 1, while teams finishing 3rd and 4th face the pressure of the Eliminator.
NRR is calculated as the difference between a team's run rate scored and run rate conceded across all matches. For example, if a team scores at 8.5 runs per over on average and concedes at 7.8 runs per over, their NRR is +0.7. A positive NRR indicates the team scores faster than it concedes, while a negative NRR suggests the opposite. Big wins boost NRR significantly, which is why teams often push for large victory margins.
Qualifier 1: Team 1 vs Team 2 — Winner goes directly to the Final. Eliminator: Team 3 vs Team 4 — Loser is eliminated. Qualifier 2: Loser of Q1 vs Winner of Eliminator — Winner advances to the Final.
Finishing in the top 2 is a massive advantage — it guarantees two shots at reaching the final and extra rest days between matches. Teams that finish 1st and 2nd have won the IPL trophy in over 70% of seasons, highlighting the importance of consistent league-stage performance.
